Drawing from her book, Fixation: How to Have Stuff without Breaking the Planet, and ranging from her experiences backstage in the theatre to repairing thousands of objects in her pop-up repair shops, Goldmark helps us see our “stuff” with fresh eyes and makes a compelling case for a less wasteful and more equitable way forward.

UN Summer Academy: Trend Talk 1: Fixation (The Book): How to Have Stuff without Breaking the Planet

Since founding Fixup, a pop-up repair shop that was covered by The New York Times, BBC, The Wall Street Journal, Salon, New York Public Radio, and more, Sandra Goldmark has become a leader in the movement to demand better "stuff." She doesn't just want to help us clear clutter—she aims to move us away from a throwaway culture, teach us to reuse and repurpose more thoughtfully, inspire companies to transform their business models, and urge policy makers to incentivize circularity at all levels. Although her goal is ambitious, the solution to getting there is surprisingly simple and involves all of us: have good stuff, not too much, mostly reclaimed, care for it, and pass it on.

Invention, Experimentation, and Radical Imagination

Inspired by the work in the exhibition Tomás Saraceno: Particular Matter(s), this panel discussion surveys artistic and scientific frameworks for research, experimentation, and theorizing. For artists, scientists, and thinkers who depend on interdisciplinary collaboration, what possibilities does this approach allow for unlocking meaning and a path forward to a fossil fuel–free future, what Saraceno and his collaborators call the Aerocene community and era. How does an interdisciplinary perspective allow us to imagine possible just and safe futures?

With: Molly Nesbit, Caroline A. Jones, Kate Marvel, and moderated by Sandra Goldmark.
